I am a native speaker and teacher of English from the UK, with a Level 4 Certificate In Teaching English To Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) from the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.
I specialise in business English, with an emphasis on advanced written and spoken English, but am comfortable teaching to all ages, abilities and backgrounds.
I combine a passion for language learning with varied teaching and training experience and over 10 years of using languages in a professional setting. I graduated with a first class honours degree in modern languages and speak Portuguese, French and German to a good standard, as well as having some knowledge of Spanish.
I've taught students from as far afield as Hong Kong, Brazil and Mongolia, as well as many places in between. I really enjoy working with, and getting to know, students from a diverse range of backgrounds, and I hope this comes across in my teaching.
ABOUT MY LESSONS
I offer structured lessons, predominantly focusing on skills training but also including grammar, role play and vocal delivery, that can, for instance, help you prepare for an exam such as IELTS or get some practice in ahead of that critical job interview or presentation. Whatever your needs, we will shape a programme that matches your goals and learning preferences, and that will enable you to easily monitor your progress as you go along.
I always aim for a relaxed environment where you have the freedom to experiment, develop your knowledge, build confidence and make progress at your own pace.
In business, the way you speak and write English matters.
My own professional experience, working for internationally-focused media companies for over 10 years, in a variety of managerial and editorial roles, has included conducting dozens of job interviews and delivering many business presentations. I can work with you to develop your spoken English so that you always make the right first impression.
My other specialism is in writing and editing English: I've been the editor of a trade magazine and have spent over a decade authoring professional articles and opinion pieces on topical issues. If you're looking to improve the structure and flow of your writing, want to know how to use style and register that's appropriate to a business or journalistic context, or just want to make your written English sound more natural, let me guide you through some key principles and share a few useful tips and tricks of the trade.
WHY TAKE LESSONS WITH ME?
In the words of my own students: “I would like to say a HUGE thank you for the time, work and effort you gave me helping improve my grade, I am incredibly grateful” (GCSE French student); "Great lesson, Tom shows me the points I need to improve clearly and in a supportive way" (Intermediate ESOL student).
I look forward to helping you achieve your own goals, as well as sharing my experience and passion for languages!
